Down for a Mash Up!
Creating Juxtaposition Through a Remix
The part of mash-ups and remixed objects that I kept most in mind was the idea of two juxtaposing objects or concepts. My process to create the following mash-ups began with thinking of opposites. Some opposites render each other useless, some of them make a political statement, and some incorporate humor. When remixing two objects, a new meaning is revealed, and I enjoyed exploring ways to create those new meanings.
1. Airplane Flower
I combined an airplane and a rose to mimic the image of a bird or a butterfly perched on the edge of the flower collecting it's nectar. This mash-up speaks to industrialization and the continued toll we place on the natural world.
2. Sleeping Alarm Clock
An alarm clock remixed so that it is shown sleeping in bed is a humorous take on time passing, which also shows the alarm clock in a useless state.
3. Alligator Ski
Another mash-up that uses humor, this one also speaks to the effect humans have on the natural world in terms of global warming. The alligator is combined with snow ski's.
4. Fire Hydrant Dock
A fire hydrant placed on a dock surrounded by water is inherently useless, which is made evident by this juxtaposing remix.
5. Blind Hot Air Balloon
I'm not entirely sure if this mash up has any kind of deeper meaning, other than I suppose the obvious humor in a giant balloon wearing glasses, or the idea of a transportation vehicle experiencing vision impairment.
6. Outlet Book
This mash up features an AC power outlet attached to the front of a book and acts as commentary on our current technology, as well as a metaphor for "plugging in" to a captivating object.
7. Plant Bulb
The image is perhaps a little difficult to see, but the bottom component is a planter pot for a small house plant. This remixed item came from the word "bulb" being used to describe a light bulb as well as some kinds of plants in their seedling stage.
8. Microphone
Maybe not technically a mash up since neither of the two items have a new purpose when put together, but I liked the "micro" part of a micro phone, and wanted to pair it with another micro object, such as a tiny mouse.
9. Lip Spoon
This mash up entails a lipstick tube on the end of a spoon, an object that may be useful to eat with, and then touch up your make up with afterwards.
10. Cowboy
My last mash up shows a carton of milk wearing cowboy boots and a hat, and I think is pretty self-explanatory, as the carton of milk is used as a stand in for an actual cow.
