  Artist Research - Annie Vought After researching through some of the artists provided on Mosaic and through my own internet searches, I came across the artist Annie Vought. She is an American artist living and working in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her work with paper revolves more around paper-cut pieces than paper-craft, but for the purposes of this research I believe her work is important because it shows the range in capabilities that paper provides. It can be very sturdy and geometric but also extremely delicate and detailed, almost like a fabric. Her work pictured above, titled Gosh I've been here before is a sheet of paper with details cut out of it until it resembles an oversized doily.  This piece is titled 1993 , and is a hand cut letter sized paper.  Rendered Mash Up I chose my airplane/rose mash up to render. I think this mash up was a good example of remix culture because it is a kind of dystopian narrative on the way our society currently interacts with the natural world. The juxtaposition between the built object of the airplane and the natural rose serves to offer an idea of a future where machines and nature interact in an intimate way, (for better or for worse).      I think t he mash up itself also makes for a beautiful statue with an anti-gravity feel to it. I chose to use a golden birch material, because I also liked the juxtaposition in a natural material that looks as though it's a gold statue. I chose to render the object as if it were in a museum or art gallery to further add to the aura of mystique around it. 

      Above are the 10 renderings I created for the ring assignment. With these designs I thought most about how they would feel and behave when on a finger, and how they might inhibit the wearer or not. 

Creating Juxtaposition Through a Remix           The part of mash-ups and remixed objects that I kept most in mind was the idea of two juxtaposing objects or concepts. My process to create the following mash-ups began with thinking of opposites. Some opposites render each other useless, some of them make a political statement, and some incorporate humor. When remixing two objects, a new meaning is revealed, and I enjoyed exploring ways to create those new meanings.  1. Airplane Flower       I combined an airplane and a rose to mimic the image of a bird or a butterfly perched on the edge of the flower collecting it's nectar. This mash-up speaks to industrialization and the continued toll we place on the natural world.  2. Sleeping Alarm Clock       An alarm clock remixed so that it is shown sleeping in bed is a humorous take on time passing, which also shows the alarm clock in a useless state.    3....

  I chose to model a ring that Karim Rashid is wearing. It's a simple square ring made out of metal with chamfered edges. I chose this item because I was drawn to Rashid's scenes for their pastel tones and the Y2K style furniture and materials. It was obvious through his personal style that he makes deliberate choices about what he wears, and so even though from a design perspective his ring was a simple choice, I feel more curious about the items designers choose to adorn themselves with, than the prominent designs featured in the film :)
